Take the Basic Rider Skills-2 (BRS-2) as an early-season refresher, to bond with that new-to-you motorcycle, or to gain experience and improve control while riding with a passenger.
BRS-2 Highlights
- 7-hour, one day, range-only course (no formal classroom session)
- Use your own 2-wheeled street legal motorcycle
- Passengers permitted only for riders with a motorcycle license or endorsement
- Requires a valid Temporary Instruction Permit Identification Card (TIPIC) or motorcycle license or endorsement
- Successful completion earns the BMV skill test waiver for a motorcycle endorsement
What It's All About
Motorcycle safety reports indicate that 75 percent of motorcycle crashes involve "experienced" riders. To begin to address the need for training of experienced riders, the BRS-2 is being offered. This course is designed for the experienced/endorsed rider (and co-rider) who want to learn more about reducing the risk of riding and practice skills under the watchful and helpful eye of a trained instructor.
The BRS-2 features an intensive hands-on approach to motorcycle rider training. Riders experience and learn how their motorcycle handles in basic and crash-avoidance maneuvers. This course is a good refresher to start the season, an excellent opportunity to learn how a new-to-you motorcycle responds and provides tips to and practice with co-riders to make their (and your) ride more enjoyable.
Experienced riders will benefit from learning in a controlled environment under the watchful and helpful eye of a trained instructor specifically what mental and physical riding skills need to be improved.
There are training sites throughout Ohio with over 150 specially-trained instructors that offer the BRS-2.

Passing the Course
The following is required to pass the course:
- 100% attendance
- 20 or fewer points deducted on the Riding Skill Evaluation at the end of the course. The Riding Skill Evaluation is similar to the On-Cycle Endorsement Test given by the Bureau of Motor Vehicles.
- No errant behavior – this is a safety course!
If you are 18 years of age or older, you do not need to pass this course to take the on-cycle endorsement test given by the Bureau of Motor Vehicles and get your motorcycle endorsement added to your license
If you are under 18 years of age, you do need to pass this course in order to take the on-cycle endorsement test given by the Bureau of Motor Vehicles or receive the skill test waiver (under certain conditions) to get a motorcycle endorsement added to your license.
Medical Considerations
Please make the training site aware of any medical conditions you may have so that may affect your ability to safely operate a motorcycle. (Co-riders should make the site aware of any medical conditions that may affect their ability to safely ride a motorcycle as a passenger.)
Examples include but are not limited to:
- Neck or back injuries that may affect your strength or mobility
- Recent injury(s) or surgery
- Pregnancy
- Mental illness
- Vision or hearing problems
- Physical disabilities, especially those affecting the hands, legs or neck
- Ability to learn or take tests such as but not limited to dyslexia, ADD, or developmental disability
Riders and passengers with medical or other special considerations may be requested to sign an additional waiver and release depending on the type and severity of the medical condition which may affect the rider's or passenger's ability to safely participate in the course.
Additionally, the rider or passenger may be requested to have a physician verify in writing the medical condition and the physician's assessment of the medical condition and its impact on the student's ability to safely participate in the riding portions of the course.
